This practical and generously illustrated text presents current concepts regarding the management of the mangled extremity, including microsurgery, vascular surgery, free tissue, nerve, hand, and replantation surgery. Since the advent of microsurgical reconstruction, significant progress has been made in the areas of replantation, free tissue transfer, as well as the refinement of skeletal fixation techniques. The scope will encompass the initial triage of a patient with a mangled upper or lower extremity, the initial and subsequent reconstructive efforts, to include skeletal fixation, vascular and soft tissue reconstruction, muscle and tendon transfers, psychological impact, therapy requirements, amputation considerations, and current data on salvage versus amputation in these scenarios. Case examples will be included to add further depth and context to the techniques and recommendations provided. It will be an ideal resource for orthopedic and trauma surgeons, residents and fellows, as well as emergency surgeons facing these intense, traumatic injuries.

Best-selling author Michael Lewis examines how a Nobel Prize-winning theory of the mind altered our perception of reality.

Forty years ago Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky wrote a series of breathtakingly original studies undoing our assumptions about the decision-making process. Their papers showed the ways in which the human mind erred systematically when forced to make judgments about uncertain situations. Their work created the field of behavioral economics, revolutionized Big Data studies, advanced evidence-based medicine, led to a new approach to government regulation, and made much of Michael Lewis' own work possible. Kahneman and Tversky are more responsible than anybody for the powerful trend to mistrust human intuition and defer to algorithms.

The Undoing Project is about the fascinating collaboration between two men who have the dimensions of great literary figures. They became heroes in the university and on the battlefield - both had important careers in the Israeli military - and their research was deeply linked to their extraordinary life experiences. In the process they may well have changed for good mankind's view of its own mind.

"I tend to get excited when the best story tellers write a new book, and when the book covers a topic I have been focused on recently this is even more so. Such was the case when Lewis covered the Nobel Prize winning duo of Daniel (Danny) Kahneman and Amos Tversky, two psychologists who developed much of the base work behind behavioral finance. I also see its roots in Robert Cialdini’s books (Influence, Pre-suasion). While Kahneman (Tversky died in 1996 so did not share in the Nobel) wrote Thinking Fast and Slow to share their life work, here Lewis tries to identify why they worked so well together. In fact I don’t recall him talking about thinking fast (immediate response) or slow (long-term investor) at all. It reads somewhere between biography and non-fiction about behavioral finance.

Some of the more interesting thoughts in the book have nothing to do with behavioral finance, but have lots to do with psychology. Lewis discusses Daryl Morey, who I would call a basketball sabermatrician. He has been GM for the Houston Rockets since 2007 using tactics similar to those described for baseball in the book Moneyball (also by Lewis). In this same chapter Lewis provides a definition of a nerd – a person who knows his own mind well enough to mistrust it. This sounds like something Charlie Munger would say (high praise).

Both Kahneman and Tversky lived in Israel, where everyone serves a stint in the military, and both saw action in the Six Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973 (when they returned from America to take up arms). Kahneman helped the Israelis design better tools for selecting officers and training pilots. Tversky was a paratrooper. Both were professors at Hebrew University at the beginning of the first war.

Our mind tricks us. After the fact, we know exactly why we saw the event coming that no one anticipated (see Taleb’s Black Swan) and surveys weigh more heavily toward events that have recently occurred. The reasons often given relate back to our days as prey on the plains of Africa (thinking fast keeps you alive in that context – you run away from a predator, as fast as you can). One of the ways to catch these inconsistencies is to devise three options, where a person chooses A over B, B over C, and C over A. This violates the law of transitivity, familiar to anyone who has ever studied algebra or logic. Lewis provides many of these examples, as did Kahneman in Thinking Fast and Slow, and I fall for nearly every one. Even after I’ve seen them before (sometimes, occasionally, I remember).

K/T developed several heuristics, where laws of chance are replaced by rules of thumb. “We often decide that an outcome is extremely unlikely, or impossible, because we are unable to imagine any chain of events that could cause it to occur. The defect, often, is in our imagination.”

• Representativeness – we see a previously developed mental model rather than thinking through the facts as presented (and are generally correct). This creates systematic errors, such as looking at a kid and immediately deciding whether they are athletic. Looking at the negative can help avoid these problems. For example, the WW2 bombs landing in London appeared to target certain areas, but really were random. If you have 23 randomly selected people in a room, the odds are better than half that at least two share a birthday.
• Availability – we more easily recall memorable events.
• Conditionality – we make contingent assumptions when none are stated. We assume normal operating conditions (e.g., normal distribution, VaR). “…people don’t know what they don’t know, but that they don’t bother to factor their ignorance into their judgments.”
• Anchoring (and adjustment) – if you are shown a large (or small) number, for example, then your response is then large (or small).
• Simulation – what could happen dominates what is likely to happen – this can lead to analysis paralysis (I find it difficult to overcome this when investing for my personal accounts – it’s hard to pull the trigger).
• Recency bias – recent events influence our probability assumptions.
• Hindsight bias - once we know how something turns out, our recollection is that we predicted it in advance (similar to Black Swans – Taleb)

How do ideas form in our mind? Is it conscious, or indirect? When we study in school, or for a credential, the focus is on repeating the “right” answer. While hard to grade, I’ve always thought it would be better to provide an answer and ask the student to improve it.

Who knew that a bad experience could be remembered more fondly if the final part of the event was not so distasteful – the peak-end rule? This was tested using colonoscopies that ended with the medical instruments brought out of the body slowly or quickly. Doing so slowly made it more likely that the person would return for future tests.

The risk manager will discover, usually the hard way, that avoiding a risk receives no reward but if you miss a risk then you will get the blame. This is a human bias.

Accounting does not consider the impact on the environment, to limited supply, or to emotions. Utility theory overstates the value. Risk aversion is a fee willingly paid to avoid regret. In any case we all prefer to avoid pain more than we want to secure gain. We react more to relative changes than absolute ones, and probability is not straightforward.

The benefits of a group often conflict with the benefit to an individual. Antibiotics are such an example. In total, limiting antibiotics is better because viruses have less chance to mutate successfully. For an individual, antibiotics are either useful or neutral. There is no downside to an individual to being treated with antibiotics.

One of the fascinating revelations in the book (for me, at least) was the need to invert. “How do you understand memory? You don’t study memory. You study forgetting.” As we study other topics we should look for opportunities to utilize this strategy.

While much of the interest in this branch of psychology is applied to investment strategies, K/T worried more about geopolitical biases and the series of avoidable mistakes that could be made by political leaders relying on gut feel. They thought that intelligence reports written as essays should be replaced by probabilities. Telling a story is not helpful in this context, but politicians tend to be afraid of numbers. We have seen evidence of this recently as briefings to the US president are said to be focused on charts and short sound bites.

As you read about financial economics, this should not be your first book. I believe it is more useful to someone already familiar with the concepts from other sources. For someone starting out on this topic I personally like Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes and How to Correct Them by Gary Belsky and Thomas Gilovich to start and then Thinking Fast and Slow by Kahneman before reading the Lewis book."

  • With no doubt, I had great fun reading “The Undoing Project.”

I was introduced to the work of Tversky and Kahneman as a college sophomore in 1988 by my teacher, hydrologist Joseph Harrington, who was a great admirer of their ideas. The beauty of what is now called “Prospect Theory” has inevitably stuck with me since. It is only in retrospect that I have come to understand it was radical for its time.

So I swallowed whole “Thinking About Thinking” within a week of having read the Michael Lewis review on Bloomberg. And I’ve since really enjoyed the recent near-autobiography of Richard Thaler’s, as well as many of Dan Ariely’s books.

Well, you don’t have to believe me on this, but Michael Lewis actually explains the concepts better!

    No joke, he really does.

And he provides an unbelievably deep, personal and sensitive account of the explosive relationship between the two giants. A very believable account too. The research done by Michael Lewis really shows. He’s had phenomenal access too, it seems.

And yet, the book does not hang together terribly well. Chapters 1 and 8 should not have made it into the book, they ought to have been relegated to the pages of Vanity Fair, where the author regularly provides fantastic material.

More to the point, what we have here is a bunch of chapters that, chronological order notwithstanding, do not constitute a book. The incredible material, the wonderful expositions, the deep insights are all present and correct, but they fail to meld into a narrative. Even the title of the book, much as it has its roots in the work of Tversky and Kahneman, does not do justice to their contribution.

It really pains me to say this, especially because the author’s previous effort, “Flash Boys,” was a genuine five-star book. Perhaps that’s the problem. Maybe if I was reading this straight off of “Boomerang” I’d have found it great. As it stands, I’m not sure I could recommend it to the general public.

If, on the other hand, you have the remotest interest in Behavioral Economics, you genuinely can’t not read “The Undoing Project” and you are guaranteed to enjoy it.

“This absorbing and important book recounts the titanic struggle over the implications of the Civil War amid the impeachment of a defiant and temperamentally erratic American president.”—Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Soul of America

When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and Vice-President Andrew Johnson became “the Accidental President,” it was a dangerous time in America. Congress was divided over how the Union should be reunited when and how the secessionist South should regain full status, whether former Confederates should be punished, and when and whether black men should be given the vote. Devastated by war and resorting to violence, many white Southerners hoped to restore a pre–Civil War society, if without slavery, and the pugnacious Andrew Johnson seemed to share their goals. With the unchecked power of executive orders, Johnson ignored Congress, pardoned rebel leaders, promoted white supremacy, opposed civil rights, and called Reconstruction unnecessary. It fell to Congress to stop the American president who acted like a king.

With profound insights and making use of extensive research, Brenda Wineapple dramatically evokes this pivotal period in American history, when the country was rocked by the first-ever impeachment of a sitting American president. And she brings to vivid life the extraordinary characters who brought that impeachment forward the willful Johnson and his retinue of advocates—including complicated men like Secretary of State William Seward—as well as the equally complicated visionaries committed to justice and equality for all, like Thaddeus Stevens, Charles Sumner, Frederick Douglass, and Ulysses S. Grant. Theirs was a last-ditch, patriotic, and Constitutional effort to render the goals of the Civil War into reality and to make the Union free, fair, and whole.

Advance praise for The Impeachers

“In this superbly lyrical work, Brenda Wineapple has plugged a glaring hole in our historical memory through her vivid and sweeping portrayal of President Andrew Johnson’s 1868 impeachment. She serves up not simply food for thought but a veritable feast of observations on that most trying decision for a democracy whether to oust a sitting president. Teeming with fiery passions and unforgettable characters, The Impeachers will be devoured by contemporary readers seeking enlightenment on this issue. . . . A landmark study.”—Ron Chernow, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Grant

 Review by Deb Rucinski

Size: 8.5 x 11 inches
22 Double-sided illustrations
Stapled binding in center
Paper back
Non-perforated pages

Paper weight: 140 gsm offset paper (approx 100 lb
weight)

Perfect for all ages, but created for girls 3-8 years
old.

This is a beautiful book full of positive affirmations and whimsical illustrations, designed to build confidence and self-esteem in young
girls. It allows them to explore their imagination and encourages conversation with adults.

Illustrations are full page and each bordered with a thin, black line. The stapled binding makes the book easier to lie flat, making it more comfortable
for both left and right handed users. There is adequate space to allow for easy removal by removing the 2 staples, or using an exacto or pen
knife down the center. The illustrations are of varying line sizes. The designs are detailed but not highly intricate, making this not too difficult for those with vision or dexterity issues.

While this is heavier paper, images are still double-sided, making it impossible to use markers on this without the picture on the
backside being damaged by bleed through. I recommend using colored pencils, pastels, crayons, and watercolor pencils, (if you use the
water very sparingly). Test your gel pens first. Some do bleed through, but not most."

I Am Confident Brave Beautiful A Coloring Book for Girls Hopscotch Girls 9780692927991 Books Reviews

  • I bought this book at the suggestion of a friend. At first, I did not know whom I was going to gift it, but now that's here and I've looked at it.... I will give the book to a young girl, but I'll be ordering some more for holiday gifts.

Girls need the messages in this book from a young age... this coloring book is a creative way to remind girls of how great they are!
  • My daughter has special needs and I knew that this would offer some benefits for her if she'd actually be interested in it (which I was concerned about). Turns out she loves it! I was shocked at how long it held her interest. She even paid attention to the affirmations on each page. She'd read it over and over as she was coloring. It helped her focus and she slowed down enough to pay attention to each color she used and then work on staying in the lines. I was so happy to see her excited about a 'project,' that I hang all the pages on the fridge. )
  • Such a cute book! I'm a dad that loves his little 6 year old girl and wants her to know how amazing she is! She colors this book, we read it together and we color it together. It has great little pictures that are relevant to the sayings on each page. Very positive book, more coloring books should be like this.
  • Wonderful book that came in at a perfect time. Each page has pictures and words to help boost self esteem and my 6 year old granddaughter who is being bullied in kinder has taken to this like a duck to water. Thank you for positive ways to help girls at all ages
  •  Review by Deb Rucinski

    Size 8.5 x 11 inches
    22 Double-sided illustrations
    Stapled binding in center
    Paper back
    Non-perforated pages

Paper weight 140 gsm offset paper (approx 100 lb

Some do bleed through, but not most.
  • In a world of predictable coloring books for kids, this one really stands out. I bought one for my daughter and a handful of others for holiday gifts for her friends. What’s not to love about exposing the girls to ideas like “I am clever, bright, powerful, creative, inventive”, etc.
  • This is perfect for helping elementary school children with positive affirmations, to support building a healthy sense of self worth. Children here all the time “you’re so cute!”, but do they hear you are brave, you are creative, or you are resourceful? These are great reminders to our children that they are a gift for all the qualities they are on the inside.
  • Bought a couple of these books as Christmas gifts. They are amazing. The girls really enjoyed them. Great idea for the young girls.

At the height of World War II, three women must come together to fight for freedom, for the men they love—and for each other.

When Hazel is given the chance to parachute into Nazi-occupied France, she seizes the opportunity to do more for the British war effort than file paperwork. Alongside her childhood friend, French-born Rose, she quickly rises up the ranks of the freedom fighters. For Rose, the Resistance is a link to her late husband, and a way to move forward without him. What starts out as helping downed airmen becomes a bigger cause when they meet Sophia, a German escapee and fierce critic of Hitler who is wanted by the Gestapo. Together the three women form a bond that will last a lifetime.

But amid the turmoil and tragedy of warfare, all three risk losing everything—and everyone—they hold dear. Will their united front be strong enough to see them through?

Hearts of Resistance edition by Soraya M Lane Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • If you are a woman and a history buff you will love this book. We all know that women were in the French Resistance, but very few books have been written about them. There are hundreds of books and movies about World War II from the male perspective but very few about the women who fought just as courageously. This book covers the lives of three Resistance fighters. The author weaves an amazing story of love, courage and the human will.
I can't wait till her next book!
  • Sophia tries to give people a place to hide in her Nazi infested home country. When her father, an active member of the party, suspects what she's doing she flees Germany and joins the French Resistance. Rose has lost everything she holds dear and doesn't mind taking a risk. She's a French woman working for the Resistance, where she meets Sophia. Hazel spent a lot of time in France with her friend Rose and therefore she speaks French without an accent. This is just one of her skills and when she joins the war effort they're more than happy to train her. Her mission is in France, with the Resistance, where she coincidentally runs into her old friend Rose. Together Sophia, Rose and Hazel are trying to do what they can to beat the Germans, will they be able to remain safe?

Sophia, Rose and Hazel risk their lives for others every single day. They don't hesitate when it comes to fighting in the war. They do what they have to do to undermine the Germans, to keep their allies safe and to make sure information is being passed on to the right people. They are intelligent women with a strong bond, but will this be enough for them to survive the war? Can they stay out of the hands of their enemy or will their worst nightmare, getting caught by the German army, become reality?

Hearts of Resistance is a fantastic gripping story about three incredible women. Sophia, Rose and Hazel are brave, capable and smart. I equally admired them all because of their skills and determination. They never hesitate when it comes to helping others and doing their duty. Hazel is a kindhearted woman with an adventurous spirit. She's engaged, but doesn't feel like she should chase a boring and bland life. She has more to offer than that. Rose fights against the people who have taken everything from her, she doesn't feel like she has much left to lose and her country has everything to gain when it comes to this brilliant woman. The honorable and outspoken Sophia despises her own father and everything he stands for and fights for what is right. I loved their strong spirits and the friendship between these three remarkable women is beautiful. In the harsh world they're part of it's an amazing soft element that captivated me from beginning to end.

Soraya M. Lane kept me on the edge of my seat with her terrific suspenseful writing. She makes her main characters and the time she's writing about come to life in a fabulous way. I couldn't stop reading Hearts of Resistance, it's filled with surprising twists and turns, adrenaline rushes and fascinating emotional layers. Soraya M. Lane has written a mesmerizing compelling story that I highly recommend.
  • I am fascinated by the WWII era. I am always drawn to books with this period as the backdrop of the story. The atrocities that people can survive amaze me. Lane does a beautiful job of telling the story of 3 ambitious, strong & heroic women who risk their lives to fight with the Resistance against the Germans. While this is a fictional story you know from history that there are so many true stories just like these. And without the bravery of women like Rose, Hazel and Sophia the war would have had a very different ending. Looking forwars to more great books from Soraya.
  • I really had a hard part putting this book down. Three courageous young women in a time when women were to be wives and mothers, went to war. The pace was fast and the tension never let up as you lived the fear and terror of waiting for the Gestapo at the door. The book felt very realistic, frightening and gritty. The characters were very real and you really learned to care for them even as the war changed and hardened them. The ending was a bit romanticized but overall I loved this book. It was a nice change from most women's literature and I think men would appreciate it too. I received this as a Goodreads Giveaway and I am so glad!
  • “Hearts of Resistance” by Soraya M. Lane was one of those books that you cannot stop reading. French-born Rose lost her husband during the war, Hazel an English woman whose fiancé is fighting for the British, and Sophia, a German is hiding her Jewish boyfriend while helping Jews flee the Nazis have been thrown together in a unique situation. Rose is a major part of the French Resistance who is being sought by the Gestapo. Hazel has been a childhood friend of Rose and has volunteered to bring her out of France before the Gestapo find her. Sophia has been betrayed to the Gestapo, imprisoned, but has escaped. These three courageous women have been brought together by circumstance and are determined to do their duty and get out of France to safety in England.

This book is a real page-turner. I read this three-hundred-eighteen-page book in a day and a half. I could not stop reading. The three women were so different in character. All three have been changed by the dynamics of wartime Europe. Will they be able to work together to save each other and their causes? The story of these women is a testament to those brave individuals who risked their lives to further the downfall of the Nazi regime and make the way smoother for the Allied invasion. Ms. Lane is a superb author. Her historical background for this novel and the descriptions of the mood of fear of the French people, the landscape, and the all-pervasive idea that death could be just around the corner, literally, all this was expertly portrayed in the story. I highly recommend this book to those who have an interest in that time in history.
  • I enjoyed the stories of the three women. From completely different backgrounds they end up in the French resistance. I liked how the author tells what happens to them after the war
  • Powerful 'fictional' account of 3 women during WW2 IN the French Resistance, relating their intense love for freedom against the hatred of the Natzis and the harrowing ugliness of war and torturing and murder of any Jew found. Their efforts helped win this war. True heroines.

The New York Times bestselling author of Tell Me Three Things and What to Say Next delivers a poignant and hopeful novel about resilience and reinvention, first love and lifelong friendship, the legacies of loss, and the stories we tell ourselves in order to survive.

Sometimes looking to the past helps you find your future.

Abbi Hope Goldstein is like every other teenager, with a few smallish exceptions her famous alter ego, Baby Hope, is the subject of internet memes, she has asthma, and sometimes people spontaneously burst into tears when they recognize her. Abbi has lived almost her entire life in the shadow of the terrorist attacks of September 11. On that fateful day, she was captured in what became an iconic photograph in the picture, Abbi (aka "Baby Hope") wears a birthday crown and grasps a red balloon; just behind her, the South Tower of the World Trade Center is collapsing.

Now, fifteen years later, Abbi is desperate for anonymity and decides to spend the summer before her seventeenth birthday incognito as a counselor at Knights Day Camp two towns away. She's psyched for eight weeks in the company of four-year-olds, none of whom have ever heard of Baby Hope.

Too bad Noah Stern, whose own world was irrevocably shattered on that terrible day, has a similar summer plan. Noah believes his meeting Baby Hope is fate. Abbi is sure it's a disaster. Soon, though, the two team up to ask difficult questions about the history behind the Baby Hope photo. But is either of them ready to hear the answers?

"I loved Julie Buxbaum's first two YA books, so of course jumped on this one. It's darker than the other two, but it's no less good for being different.

If you haven't read anything by this author before, you might not believe that she could do a light, fun romance against the backdrop of a 9/11 story, but she absolutely can. I rarely literally laugh out loud when I'm reading, but I did multiple times in this book, mostly because of Abbi. I really liked her connection with Noah, and all of their secondary problems - friendship, parents, secrets, illness, expectations.

Our reading teen was born well after 9/11, so I'm always interested in how she'll deal with books like this. Lots to discuss, both world events and personal tragedies."

The hilarious New York Times bestselling picture book about dealing with unexplained feelings...and the danger in suppressing them!

Jim the chimpanzee is in a terrible mood for no good reason. His friends can't understand it--how can he be in a bad mood when it's SUCH a beautiful day? They encourage him not to hunch, to smile, and to do things that make THEM happy. But Jim can't take all the advice...and has a BIT of a meltdown. Could it be that he just needs a day to feel grumpy?

Suzanne and Max Lang bring hilarity and levity to this very important lesson. This picture book is an excellent case study in the dangers of putting on a happy face and demonstrates to kids that they are allowed to feel their feelings (though they should be careful of hurting others in the process!).

  • As a school librarian, health and wellness teacher, voracious reader, and grandmother, I often think about reviewing a book, but there are so many other things to do. I HAD to write about this one. The message is powerful and communicated in a humorous, undidactic manner, in large part thanks to the deeply appealing, funny and poignant illustrations. It would be hard to find someone who couldn't relate to Jim Panzee. I LOVE this book.
  • The art instantly drew me to this book. I’m a storyboard artist myself and really appreciate the simplistic yet expressive drawing. It’s adorable and a cute read. Excited to read this to my baby niece once she starts talking.
  • I know this book has really good reviews but we spend time telling our grandchildren they have the ability to change how they feel. The book suggests being a grouch is ok.
  • I wish I had had this book as a child. I think it's important for children to learn that it's fine to "have moods" or "be grumpy." It's OKAY for children--and girls especially--to not have to "please" all the time or always be "on." • This is a great book for children and adults alike. Great message about feeling feelings, and being a good friend.
  • My two year old daughter LOVES to read along with this book, and mimics the grumpy faces in the mirror.
  • I was thrilled to find this book so I can read it to my Grumpy Monkey. It is a great book for children.
  • We've had this book for only a few days and I've already read it about 25 times... my almost 2 yo daughter loves it! This instantly trumped all of her other favorites. Its a cute story and message and the illustrations are great. I do enjoy reading it... just not so many times in a row!
