Asked to name a great physicist, most people would mention Newton or Einstein, Feynman or Hawking. But ask a physicist and there's no doubt that James Clerk Maxwell will be near the top of the list.

Maxwell, an unassuming Victorian Scotsman, explained how we perceive color. He uncovered the way gases behave. And, most significantly, he transformed the way physics was undertaken in his explanation of the interaction of electricity and magnetism, revealing the nature of light and laying the groundwork for everything from Einstein's special relativity to modern electronics.

Along the way, he set up one of the most enduring challenges in physics, one that has taxed the best minds ever since. "Maxwell's demon" is a tiny but thoroughly disruptive thought experiment that suggests the second law of thermodynamics, the law that governs the flow of time itself, can be broken. This is the story of a groundbreaking scientist, a great contributor to our understanding of the way the world works, and his duplicitous demon.

"Professor Maxwell’s Duplicitous Demon: The Life and Science of James Clerk Maxwell is another in a recent swell of biographical looks at some of the great geniuses of the past. (i.e. "A Mind at Play: How Claude Shannon Invented the Information Age" and "The Quantum Labyrinth: How Richard Feynman and John Wheeler Revolutionized Time and Reality"), and I have to say it was a thoroughly enjoyable read! Much like the Claude Shannon book mentioned above, it brings to light the incredible significance of the work of a 'lesser-known' pioneer in science. Einstein himself once called Maxwell "the father of modern physics"... and I have to admit that my prior knowledge of the man was limited to the story of his infamous 'demon'.

Brian Clegg does a great job of weaving that story of the demon into Maxwell's life journey. The book is a good blend of Maxwell's life story and the scientific breakthroughs that he achieved. We are left to wonder what other achievements he may have made had he not died at a relatively early age, at a time when he was still producing high-quality work.

I highly recommend this book to anyone fascinated by genius. A well written, thorough portrait of a great scientist!"
